The Vice Chancellor, Lead City University, Ibadan, Prof. Kabiru Aderemi Adeyemo, has said Ibadan is more than a historic metropolis; its multifaceted role in Nigeria’s development is undeniable.
Adeyemo stated this while delivering a paper delivered at the inauguration of the new executives of Omo Ajorosun Club on 21st August, 2024.
The paper had the theme: ‘Ibadanland: A Region of Entrepreneurship Development, Innovation and Educational Advancements in Nigeria’.
The Vice Chancellor emphasised that significant contributions of the city span politics, economy, sports, trading, communication, commerce, music, recreational activities, and the legal sector.
The VC said: ‘’Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo State, Nigeria, is more than just a historic metropolis; it stands as a cornerstone for regional growth, entrepreneurship, educational advancement, and innovation in South-Western Nigeria. As one of the largest cities in the country, Ibadan has played a significant role in shaping the socio-economic and educational development of the region’’.
‘’Ibadan’s history is deeply rooted in Yoruba culture, with its origins tracing back to the 1820s. Over the centuries, it has evolved from a small settlement into a major urban centre. Its historical significance includes its role as a centre of the Yoruba Wars and its later emergence as a commercial and educational hub.
‘’Ibadan’s multifaceted role in Nigeria’s development is undeniable, with significant contributions spanning politics, economy, sports, trading, communication, commerce, music, recreational activities, and the legal sector. Its strategic location, rich cultural heritage, and historical significance have established Ibadan as a pivotal player in both the southwestern region and the nation at large. This enduring influence positions Ibadan to continue being a cornerstone of Nigeria’s progress and development’’.
The scholar maintained that the advancement of Ibadanland required a collective effort beyond government initiatives.
He added that key organisations such as the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), alongside stakeholders, local clubs, and associations, are essential in driving sustainable growth across social, economic, and entrepreneurial domains.
To the new executives, Adeyemo said: ‘’As leaders of this esteemed club, your roles are integral to the continued progress of Ibadanland. The commitment you make today is not just a pledge but a responsibility to lead with professionalism, integrity, and a focus on the broader societal good. Your leadership is crucial in upholding the principles of Corporate Governance and Public Administration, ensuring that the club’s influence extends positively across the community’’.
