A Non-Governmental Organisation, SheCares, on Friday ,28 June ,2024 ,organised an Inter-Girls Secondary School Oratory Competition in Ibadan.
About 15 schools participated at the competition, which took place at Educare Trust Nigeria, Aerodrome Estate, Samonda Ibadan.
The programme had the theme: “Embracing and Sustaining African values and culture through Education”.
Yejide Girls Grammar School, Ibadan emerged the winner of the oratory competition, St Louis Grammar School Mokola came second while Deril Academy Alakia Ibadan came third position .
“The Inter-Girls Secondary school Oratory competition was a huge success”, Helen Akpabio, who is the convener of the programme, said.
She added that the theme is a clarion call for young people to recognise the importance of African culture and values and to embrace these in their daily lives.
Akpabio highlighted the need for education to be used as a tool for sustaining and promoting these values, so that African cultural heritage can be preserved for generations to come .
Akpabio added that, “it is important that we should not forget our identity as that is our root and who we are.
“The aim of the competition was to inspire young people to become ambassadors of African culture and values, and to encourage them to actively seek ways to promote and sustain these values”.
The mother of the day, Amb. Romoke Ayinde (Kay Rom Lee) , urged the students not to allow modernity deprive them of who they are and where they come from.
