The Inspector- General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, on Monday, blamed the internal security threat on the pervasive culture of corruption and impunity within Nigeria’s governance structure.
Egbetokun stated this while delivering the first Distinguished Personality Lecture of the TETFUND Centre of Excellence in Multidisciplinary Studies, University of Ibadan at Trenchard Hall, Ibadan, with the theme:”The Nigeria Police Force and the Management Internal Security’’.
The police boss lamented that lives and properties had been lost to the internal security threat across the six geo-political zones of the country.
He highlighted factors affecting the socio-economic growth of the country to include the activities of Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP), Boko Haram, among others.
He called on the Nigerian government to take decisive action to combat corruption and impunity within the NPF.
The IGP noted that there has been significant development recently in Nigerian security, just as the security situation has improved tremendously across the country.
The police chief said despite numerous challenges faced by the Nigeria Police Force in managing internal security during crises, there have been notable achievements that demonstrate their potential and resilience.
Earlier in his remark, the Vice Chancellor of the UI, Prof. Olukayode Adebowale described the IGP who holds local and foreign certifications in security and peace studies, as an exemplary, and exceptional officer of police.
In a remark, a popular security scholar, Prof. Olawale Albert, lauded the IGP for strides in education and professionalism.
The Pro-Chancellor of Lead City University, Ibadan, Prof. Babajide Owoeye was the special guest of honour while Dr. Benjamin Aluko was the host.
