MOSOP President; Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu,Deacon Owolabi Oladejo,
Comrade Jare Ajayi and others.
They made the call during a one-day symposium held at the Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria.
The Symposium was organized by The REBIRTH GROUP and Rebuilding Nigeria.
The theme of the symposium was: ‘From the Founding Fathers to the Prodigal Sons and Daughters: The Challenge of Nation-building and Development’.
Participants came from various parts of Nigeria. People also participated from different parts of the world virtually.
Organized Ethnic Nationalities also participated. Those in attendance and virtually included Representatives of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Southern Kaduna Peoples Organisation (SOKAPU), Afenifere, Movement for the Survival of Ogoni Peoples (MOSOP), Okpe Union, South West Development Stakeholders Forum etc.
Chairman of the occasion was Ambassador Yemi Farounbi while the Keynote Speakers included Professor John Bunmi Ayoade, Dr. Sadiq Abubakar Gombe,
Issues touched upon included rubrics and foundation of the Nigeria Nation, the fortunes and misfortunes it has been experiencing first from its amalgamation in 1914 and particularly since Independence in 1960.
According to the communique issued and signed by Farounbi and others,Nigeria as presently constituted is not working in the best interests of Nigerians and the way the country is presently structured and is being ran is largely responsible for Nigeria not working for the betterment of Nigerians.
The communique read: “Nigeria as presently constituted is not working in the best interests of Nigerians.
“That the way the country is presently structured and is being ran is largely responsible for Nigeria not working for the betterment of Nigerians.
“Thus, the country should be restructured into Regions.
“There is the need to make the Central Government weaker in relation to other levels of government in the country. In other words, the central government is to concern itself only with issues that the federating units can not handle. Meaning that the central government should be smaller and smarter.
“Six Regions were proposed perhaps in line with the present geo-political zones.
But each region would be equal to the other in status and ranking.
“Restructuring into Regions is not meant to abrogate states that we have presently. The Regions would form the Federating units to make the country to be known as United Regions of Nigeria (URN). Each Region is to have its own Constitution and be autonomous.
“Every nationality would have self-determination even within the region and states they are in.
“To avoid domination or even sit-tight syndrome, heads of each level of government should be rotational on the basis of the constituents within that enclave. The head who would be from a part of the area in question would a person from another part as deputy. The latter would automatically become the Head of the Government at the end of the tenure of the incumbent.
“To give spirit to the above, the Symposium called for the setting up of a Rebirth Commission.
“In view of the huge sum of money being spent under the current presidential system, the Symposiasts advocated for a return to Parliamentary System of Government.
” Participants were encouraged to continue the advocacy when they return to their respective places.
“Furthermore, participants resolved that the Symposium will be taken place in every part of the country. Indeed, from this maiden one that held in Ibadan, the train will move to Kaduna to Enugu then to the remaining zones in the country.
“Women and Youths are to be encouraged to and given more opportunities for greater participation in the affairs of the State.
“Symposiasts expressed appreciation to the organizers of the Symposium and pledged to be active in the efforts to restructure Nigeria, make it more people-focused and become so democratic that no one area or group would act as though it is above or superior to the others”.
