All is set for the diamond birthday celebration of a renowned public intellectual and scholar at the University of Ibadan, Prof. Amos Oyesoji Aremu.
To mark the 60th birthday, Prof. Aremu has written a book with the title: ‘My Unibadan Distance Learning Centre Years; A Memoir’. Prof. Francis Egbokhare , a fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Letters, will review the book.
The celebration is slated for Saturday March 30, 2024 at the UI Alumni Hall, Ibadan by 10.00 a.m.
The First Lady of Ekiti State, Dr. Olayemi Abiodun-Oyebanji will be the Special Guest of Honour, while the Chairman of the occasion is a former Minister of Interior, Lt. Gen. Abdulraham Bello Dambazau {rtd}. The University of Ibadan Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Adebowale is the chief host. Omoluabi Tayo Adebowale, the Senior Partner, Ade Adebowale & Co. Chartered Accountants, Lagos and Dr. Bamidele and Mrs Tolulope Onalaja of Revolution Plus Property will be chief launchers.
Numerous men of God, including Revd. {Dr.} Stephen Oni, Revd. {Dr.} Emmanuel Olumide Kehinde, Dr. Samson Ayokunle, Revd Tunde Babatunde,and others are expected at the event.
Aremu, a former Director of Distance Learning Centre, is of the Department of Guidance and Counseling of the premier university.
PROF. AREMU’s BIOGRAPHY
Prof. Amos Oyesoji Oluwafemi is the third son and child of Papa and Mama Joseph and Esther Olatundun Aremu was born at Maternite d’Adjame, Abidjan, Ivory Coast on 27th March, 1964. He started his primary education at Adjamae, Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
Aremu was brought to Nigeria by his father in 1975 with two of his half brothers, Daniel and Abel to continue his education because their parents did not want their children to have free French-based education in order not to make them to lose their identities as young Nigerians. He completed the modern school education in 1978 in flying colours having passed all his papers at top grades.
He attended Baptist High School, Iwo, between 1979 and 1983 where he proved his brilliance and later enrolled for his Higher School Certificate arm of Baptist High School, Iwo in 1983.
He again was the best student in Arts/Social Science Class on graduation with 10 Advanced Level points in 1985.
For university education, Aremu, who planned to study Law at the University of Ibadan, could not make it due to the quota system (although he is now an associate lecturer in the Faculty of Law where he teaches Psychology and Law). He was eventually admitted to study Guidance and Counselling in September, 1985. He graduated with honours in 1988 and proceeded to Ilorin in Kwara State where he was mobilised for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
On completion of the one-year mandatory service to the nation in
1989, he returned to the University of Ibadan for his Masters Degree in Counselling
Psychology. He was on the programme between 1989 and 1990 and he graduated on top of his class. Given his quest for knowledge at its peak, he enrolled for the Ph.D programme in 1992 as a part-time student having secured appointment as a Guidance Counselor at Oluyole Estate Grammar School, Ibadan immediately after his NYSC scheme in January, 1990.
He later transferred his services to Osun State (upon creation of Osun State) where he was also a Guidance Counsellor at Ido Osun High School in Egbedore Local Government.
On successful defence of his Ph.D Thesis on 22 December, 1997, Amos Oyesoji Aremu was appointed as a Lecturer Grade II in the Department of Guidance and Counselling, University of Ibadan, Ibadan.
Career, Recognitions, Fellowships and Honours
A very versatile and versed polyglot, Aremu’s career and professional interests span three main thematic areas -Counselling Psychology, Policing and Criminal Justice and eLearning Education.
Prof. Oyesoji Aremu won the prestigious Commonwealth Fellowship as a Lecturer Grade I between 2007 and 2008 and was a visiting Commonwealth Fellow at the Institute of Criminal Justice Studies, University of Portsmouth, United Kingdom. He is a fellow of many professional associations and bodies in Nigeria and abroad.
He was the acting Director, Centre for Open Distance and eLearning, Osun State University. He is a Member, University of Ilesa Review Committee, March to May, 2023, Chairman, Osun State Education Summit, July to September, 2023; and former Director, Distance Learning Centre, UI.
He was also a Visiting Professor, Open, Distance and eLearning, Osun State University, Osogbo.
Dn. Professor Amos Oyesoji Aremu started a family life when he got married to his old
classmate, Dns. Olajumoke Omolabake Aremu on 17th December, 1994 in Lagos. The union is blessed with three children.
