As the nation battles with various economic crises, the President of the Nigerian Economic Society {NES}, Prof. Adeola Adenikinju, has called on the federal and state governments to consult the Society to help them address the myriad of challenges bedeviling them.
The professor of Petroleum Economics at the University of Ibadan made the call while speaking with journalists in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The former Director of the Centre for Petroleum, Energy Economics and Law { CPEEL}, UI, stated that members of the Society were poised to make their expertise available to the governments in order to set the economy on the trajectory of accelerated development.
The immediate past Head of Department of Economics at the premier university said: ‘’This is a time that the Nigerian government should also engage with the Nigerian Economic Society so we can come up with policies that are based on evidence. We are looking for people that can come up with ideas that are not selfish, that are not based on personal or group interest rather on what’s best for Nigeria.
‘’We can do comparative analysis. We look at what other countries have done that worked and come up with evaluation of policies.
‘’One of the things that we do is to look at the economy in a holistic sense, because it is a system. The economy is such that what you do in one sector may have an impact on another sector of the economy. Our members are ready to fully collaborate with the government in trying to address some of these challenges’’.
