All is set for the 2024 African Traditional Medicine Day.
The programme is billed to take place on Wednesday, August 29, 2024. It will be hosted by the Centre for Herbal Medicine and Drug Discovery, University of Medical Sciences, Ondo Town at the TETFund Building, Laje Campus of the institution.
Traditional medicine, also known as indigenous medicine or folk medicine, comprises medical aspects of traditional knowledge that developed over generations within the folk beliefs of various societies, including indigenous peoples, before the era of modern medicine.
” It is therefore important to preserve this heritage using modern techniques and methods so as to maximise the inherent benefits for all and sundry”, the Public Relations Officer of the university, Isaac Oluyi, said in a statement made available to Optimal Times News.
Oluyi added: “To this end, the African Traditional Medicine Day for 2024 has been aptly themed “Development and Promotion of Indigenous Herbal Medicine to Facilitate Universal Healthcare in Nigeria”.
The PRO added: “The Keynote Speaker for the event is Pharmacist Zainab Shariff, the Pioneer Director, Traditional Complementary and Alternative Medicine Department, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. Also expected at the event are Dr Azeez Aderemi, Acting Chief Executive Officer/Interim Administrator, Federal Colege of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, and Prof Koffi Busia, former Director of Health Service, West African Health Organisation.
“The 2024 African Traditional Medicine Day is open to herbal medicine practitioners locally and nationally, and it promises to showcase the best of our African traditional medicine and how to deploy it for efficacious usage”.
