The Vice Chancellor, KolaDaisi University, Ibadan, [KDU-I], Prof. Adeniyi Olatunbosun [SAN]; the Chairperson, Nigerian Bar Association, [NBA], Ibadan branch, Mrs. Folasade Aladeniyi; a former Chairman, Young Lawyers Forum, Ibadan Chapter, Mr. Adesile Obasa; the Acting Head of Department, Private and Commercial Law of KDU-I, Dr. Temilade Jolaosho and her Public and International Law Department, Dr. Babatunde Ekundayo, have stressed the need for Law students to hone their skills, advocate reforms and embrace good characters as well as ethics to proffer solutions to Nigeria’s problems.
They made the call during the opening ceremony of the Law Student Association [LAWSA] week of KDU-I. The programme has the theme: ‘Solving Nigeria’s Forex Crisis: The Legal Perspective’.
The scholars and lawyers said the myriad of problems bedeviling the country could be addressed through the right legislation, advocacy, honesty and ethical conduct by the law students.
According to the VC, who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Prof. Olatunbosun, ‘’Law is meant to solve the challenges in our society and also even when it comes to forex, we must conform with the rules of law. Law is to regulate how we transfer business across borders and both the financial sector and the investors and also those who also want to have anything to do with foreign exchange must conform with the rules of the banking law and negotiable instruments as well as other financial regulations governing this aspect’’.
The VC said: ‘’The law profession is a noble profession and whoever wants to join it must abide by the rules and tenets of the profession. By and large, every prospective lawyer, starting from the various faculties of law must be people of good conduct at all times. Character is of essence and we must maintain decorum, decency in all our doings. We have the rules of ethics for the profession.
‘’At the Koladaisi University, we’re also trying to promote that our students abide by the regulations, and be of good conduct. Learning and character are also key essentials of every aspiring lawyer in the profession’’.
In his lecture, a former Chairman, Young Lawyers Forum, Ibadan Chapter, Mr. Obasa, who was a guest lecturer, said lawyers trade in solutions and the Law students must up-skill, uphold the rules of law, advocate reforms and be part of Nigeria’s solutions, not part of the problems.
He said: ‘’Lawyers trade in solutions and the Law students must up-skill, uphold the rules of law, advocate reforms and be part of Nigeria’s solutions, not part of the problems. One of the problems of foreign exchange is the law. Look at the laws and recommend solutions. Uphold the rules of law. The solutions must start from us. You must advocate reforms. Be part of solutions not part of the problems. If there is liquidity in the sector, the problem of the black market will become history. The ways out are availability, reduction in demand and stop patronising the black market’’.
Another guest speaker, and chairperson, the Ibadan branch NBA, Mrs. Aladeniyi, emphasised the urgent need for a review of Nigeria’s laws and policies to enhance productivity.
On her part, the Acting Head of Department, Private and Commercial Law, Dr. Jolaosho, urged the students to be abreast of the developments in the legal profession in order to be part of solutions.
Also speaking, Dr. Ekundayo, said by addressing the legal aspects, Nigeria could better manage its forex challenges, and ensure a stable and a robust economic environment conducive to growth and development.
